No, this time around, it ain’t Mauritius, Malaysia, Switzerland or Dubai. Director Raj Chakrabarty, known to tread uncharted waters, courted the virgin locales of Sri Lanka instead to fill the two song-anddance sequences of Le Chakka... Back in the city after shooting for eight days on a trot with Payel in Sri Lanka, Tollywood’s hot property, Dev, says, “We shot in Galle. It’s a beautiful place, but the temparature hovered at a constant 50°C. Imagine braving the blazing heat and even dancing in that weather! I’ve got sun-tanned.” Quiz the director on shooting in locales unheard of in Tollywood and he explains, “Le Chakka... is about the tussle between the Ghoti and Bangal, centering around cricket. The locations are a part of two dream sequences and I was looking for a place that is beautiful minus all that jazz. And so, I zeroed in on Galle.” Talking about the choreography, the director says it’s to Shankar Master’s steps that Dev wooed Payel. “Despite the scorching summer sun playing spoilsport, there was no stopping Dev and Payel,” says Raj. Well, that’s what you call, chance pe dance !

Priya Entertainments hosted a magnificent cultural night, Borshoboron, on the evening prior to Poila Baisakh.

Borshoboron presented a plethora of programs ranging from drama to fashion show. The evening kick started with a romantic drama, Tobu Mone Rekho penned by Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee. It revolved around the life of two women in love, voiced over by Chaiti Ghoshal and Suchita Raychaudhury.

Just when the romance was at its peak, Rongorosh tickled the minds of all with its outstanding comedy, by the dramatized readings of Dulal Lahiri and elocutionist Sutapa Bandopadhyay.

After giggling over for more than quarter time, the ambiance demanded for some soothing melody to go with the flow. Chironton Swarnajug, a musical tribute to the musicians of the 60s and 70s, by Calcutta Ensemble took to stage to melt the moods.

Finally, came the turn for some ramp walk. Babuana Bibiani, portraying a theme of the zamindar, and kotha styles, designed exclusively by Sarbari Dutta and Shampa Das, caught up with tollywood stars, Dev, Tota Roychoudhury, Kamalika, June Maliah, Chaiti Ghoshal and Arindam Sil in the dhutis and saris, drapped in a unique style as demanded by the theme, added a lift with props such as hookah and paaner bata.

He’s not a great actor. He’s only half way up the learning curve. He’ll call himself a star the day he handles failures as well as his successes. He fears losing it all. He can’t help but bring on the waterworks. He doesn’t have a 4 am friend. His words, not ours. Yet Tollywood’s reigning No. 1, DEV, can still nix projects !

How has the journey been from Dev Adhikari to Tollywood’s hot property, Dev ?

• (Laughs) God has been kind. While I enjoy the love and attention lavished on me, at times, I do wonder whether I deserve all this! There’s a latent fear of losing it all. If it weren’t for the unconditional love of my groupie, my parents’ blessings and the hard work of my directors, I wouldn’t be the Dev I am. Full marks to Moni and Srikantda for sprucing me up.

Which Dev are you talking about — the actor or the superstar?

• Dev, the hard worker, who’s trying to be a good actor and also a superstar.

Tollywood film-makers have unanimously concluded that Dev is a fantastic dancer with awesome screen presence. Why is Dev, the actor, conspicuous by his absence ?

• I’m only half way up the learning curve. I’ve got to develop my acting skills and work on my diction. I’m not talented, but I am focussed and hardworking. Directors have taught me how to face the camera; they know I’m not a great actor. I vet a script 100 times over and rehearse at least 10 times before a take. Credit goes to the DOP for my larger-than-life screen presence. Hours of rehearsals manifest in the way I dance on-screen.

It’s said that people learn from the failures in life. Has Dev ever failed ?

• I will call myself a star the day I learn to handle failures as well as my successes. That’s not to say I don’t know what failure is. My first film, Agnisapath, was a disaster and hurtled me into depression. Then, I Love You happened. Despite the film being a hit, I was out of work for one-and-a-half years. But life took a 360° turn after Mon Mane Na. Before every film, I retrospect. I psyche myself up saying, ‘Dev, you have to do it!’

You are known to be a cry-baby, giving vent to your emotions when a shot is not up-to-the-mark…

• I can’t help but bring on the waterworks! I am passionate about my work and I don’t want directors making a concession because of below par performance.

What happened to the Dev-Subhasree pairing?

• Producers and directors are in a better position to answer this. Maybe, they feel, the screen pairing is no more a box-office draw.

Dui Prithibi and Le Chakka... are both with Raj Chakrabarty. You seem to be his favourite…

• Raj is a good friend and both of us hunger to do better. We gel well. By now, I’ve come to understand what he likes and dislikes and the same holds true for him. In Le Chakka…, I’ve only followed his instructions. Everyone was a little strung out about me sporting a stubble for the film, but Raj and I were confident about the look even if it meant bristling a few.

But didn’t Raj also famously say that Soham is a better actor…

• Raj is a friend and can honestly tell it like it is. Soham is definitely a better actor than me.

The gap between the releases, Bolo Na Tumi Aamar and Le Chakka…, is five months. Have you deliberately cut down on work?

• In the past four years, I’ve learnt the art of saying ‘no’. Quality matters over quantity.

Life must be lonely at the top...

• To some extent, yes. I don’t have a 4 am friend.

It’s hard to believe that Dev is still single…

• No, I am, very much !

Together, they burnt up the screen in Rajib’s Dujone. Now, the Dev-Srabanti pair is back with a bang! Cashing in on the hit jodi is none other than Sujit Mondal of Saat Pake Bandha fame.
Confirming the news, Dev says, “I know I’m doing the film. But I’m not sure of the rest of the cast. I’m yet to read the script.” Srabanti, who’s currently busy shooting for Ravi Kinagi’s untitled next, says excitedly, “Yes, I’m doing the film. But it’s too early to talk about the project. I’ll be reading the script soon.”
Music of the film, we hear, is by Jeet Ganguly .

★ Sujit Mondol's Next : Shoot Starts on May 11 ★

Sujit Mondal might have been from Mumbai, but the director always dreamt of making films in Bengali, which was first turned into reality with Saat Paake Bandha. “SPB was an acid test for me. Thank God, I came out with flying colours. Bolo Na Tumi Amar also fared well at the BO. It’s always satisfying to make Bengali films since the audience here knows how to appreciate good work,” says Mondal who is currently busy with the pre-production of his as-yet-untitled venture, which stars Tapas Paul, Dev and Srabanti. The film goes on the floors on May 11.
“It’s a relationship story that revolves around a father (Tapas), his daughter (Srabanti) and an outsider (Dev). It shows how a relationship changes with the change in circumstances. Adventure plays a major role in this film. The need for values is also adequately stressed on. Apart from Kolkata, we will be shooting in the Dooars, where we plan to construct a makeshift palace with the hills as backdrop. We are also thinking of shooting the song-and-dance sequences in Europe,” informs the director.
Mondal, who has earlier worked with Dev in BNTA, is looking forward to working with Tapas Paul and Srabanti. “Tapasda is my idol. I’ve grown up on his films, Dadar Kirti, Saheb, Gurudakshina etc. Getting to direct him will be a pleasure. As for Dev, I’ve always enjoyed working with him. I’ve heard that Srabanti is a natural born actor and effervescent in front of the camera. I’m excited to work with such a good team,” smiles Sujit. Script of the film is by NK Salil and the cast also includes Premjit and Kaushik Banerjee, among others .

Dev is perhaps the first he-man Bengali cinema
has produced. He is tall, dark, handsome and though his Bengali diction needs to be worked upon, the minute he appears on screen, the hall spills over with whistles, cat-calls and oohs and aahs from the damsels ..

They say you arrived from nowhere to find yourself in Tollywood. Is this true?

I did not arrive from ‘nowhere’ but from Mumbai, the country capital that represents Indian cinema. Instead of making it in Bollywood, I came to Tollygunge. My father owns a restaurant at Bandra and my mother is a housewife. I was studying to become a computer engineer. Unfortunately, there was a paper leak in the final exams. and there had to be a re-examination. We were told to wait for two months, which stretched on endlessly as I kept waiting in Pune. I felt frustrated and went into depression. I felt going on a holiday would be a relief. My father introduced me to Abbas-Mustan, whom he knew through his catering business. I was fascinated and wanted to continue as an observer. They said, “You are already a part of our team”. Ironically, the paper-leak case went to court and the court decided that there will be no re-exam. I passed out with 83 per cent. But by then, it was too late. I feel very sad when I look back to realise that my father’s entire savings had gone into educating me, but it came to naught.

Did you go through any training stint?

I approached Kishore Namit Kapoor who was then conducting a workshop for the actors of Tarzaan (2004) and would drop in on the sets. But I could not afford his fees. He said he would not ask me for money. Thanks to his generosity, he trained me for a diploma.

There were problems at home.

Yes. I had a big fight with my father because he was terribly scared about my venturing into the very risky world of films. I argued with him that one year had already been wasted. I asked him to give me another year to try and prove myself and finally, he agreed very reluctantly. A Bengali film unit came to the sets of a Vikram Bhatt film where I was an observer. Sujit Guha’s cameraman Babul Roy spotted me and asked me if I would want to be a hero in a Bengali film. I asked Abbas
. He said - “Films are not big or small. This is a good chance for you. With us, you can only be an assistant at the most. Go for it.” But the film I was chosen for ultimately did not have me. But I had already boarded the train. This was at the end of 2004. By then, I was determined to make it in films. My first film Agni Sapath directed by Probir Nandy was a flop. But then came Shri Venkatesh Films’ I Love You and changed everything.

What happened when I Love You turned out to be a big box-office hit?

Honestly, I was scared. I still am. There is a lot of tension when you are a complete fresher and attached to a film that turns out to be a box-office success. But I am deeply grateful to the two brothers Moni and Srikant of Shree Venkatesh Films who have made what you see of Dev today. It is wrong of the media to think that they run my professional and personal life - they don’t. But I do consult them before I sign on with other producers. I am not contract-bound to them. I am scared because I have put everything at stake to make it here. All my films from I Love You to Bolo Na Tumi Aamaar have been hits. But this is worrisome. I constantly question myself about being able to get the reward of having sacrificed everything else for this career.

To what would you attribute your success?

If owning a Honda City, a 29th floor apartment at South City, good remuneration and millions of fans is success, I do not agree. I am yet to cope with a flop. I will consider myself a real star only when I learn to handle failure. I happen to be a very negative person. When a director scolds me for a bad shot, I go into a corner and weep like a child. On the eve of every release, I feel that this film will surely flop. I never wanted to be a hero. I wanted to become a director. But fate had other plans. I had a vacant and long wait of 14 months between I Love You and Premer Kahini. This was the most difficult period of my career. I attribute my success mainly to the neglect, the humiliation and feelings of rejection I experienced before Dev became a saleable name. The memories motivate me and inspire me to get ahead.

Are you a very hard worker?

Yes, I work very hard. Critics had only negative comments about my Bengali diction. I hired a good tutor and now I can also read Bengali. I spend my time in the gym, or work on my lines, or do homework on my role and go through scripts thoroughly. I also watch films, mainly those that feature Uttam Kumar. He is my idol. I spend time with Moni-da, Srikant-da and Arijit Dutta of Piyali Films who have become great friends and are also like my elder brothers. I do not party, I do not go to night-clubs, and am an extremely focussed person.

Are there any Bollywood dreams?

None. I have been very lucky so far. I have achieved within two years what it would take other actors 10 years to achieve. The money I have earned from three films is equal to what others would make over 100 films. Thousands would be ready to die for the place I have in the industry. All I have going for me is good height, a good body and some good looks. I am not a very talented person. I am a director’s actor. But can only good looks take you this far? Good-looking guys are all around you. Few of them can make it to the top. So, why would I want to give all this up to begin afresh in Bollywood? My only regret is of being misunderstood by my near and dear ones. They are prone to misread every line I speak as an example of my fame. What I need now is the power to sustain the box office rating I have achieved with the blessings of everyone around me.

Turtle’s eighth exclusive outlet at Lindsay Street was inaugurated by Dev on Monday. Turtle is a men’s wear and accessories range that include varieties in trousers to t-shirts till gillets.

Talking on men’s fashion for this humid weather, Dev said, “I feel it is better to wear light and cool colors in this weather as most of the time we, men, are out working under the scorching sun. I prefer more of light colored tees, much in light blue or white, during this time. These colors keep you cool and are also in vogue”. Dev even confessed that he is not in use with the Turtle’s range but was enthralled with its collections in the new outlet. The cool star also picked up few dress stuffs from the shop for himself.

Jeet, Dev and Koel hit the Purulia jungle track for Raj Chakraborty’s Dui Prithibi. t2 caught them in action .

Produced by Shree Venkatesh Films, Dui Prithibi is based on the 2008 Telugu hit Gamyam. For the past 10 days, the film team made daily trips into the “Maoist belt” of Balarampur and Ayodhya Pahar for the shoot from their base camp in Purulia town. Here’s what the lead trio were up to...

A pretty, spunky doctor breaks up with her beau and leaves for the villages to serve the needy; the beau, a rich kid with a flashy motorcycle, hits the road to track her down; a thief, with his sights set on the costly bike, befriends the jilted man on the pretext of helping him find his lady love. That’s how the story of Dui Prithibi goes — Raj Chakraborty’s road movie starring Jeet as the lover boy, Koel Mullick as his sweetheart and Dev as the thief .

Yeh Dosti : Together they are on the hunt for Jeet’s lost love, but the two leading men had bonded long before they signed Dui Prithibi. “I have known Jeet ever since I joined the film industry but if you ask me, it’s a friendship between a superstar and a junior artiste!

I rode this one before we started shooting. I have a Yamaha which I bought in 1992. I have modified it into a mud bike and I ride it off and on on the streets of Calcutta. It gives me a sense of freedom. I wear a helmet, so nobody recognises me!” says Jeet

Dear Doctor : With a doctor’s white robe and stethoscope in hand, Koel is all set to nurse Dev’s wounded arm. “My character is a very level-headed, practical girl. I had played an aspiring doctor in my last film Bolo Na Tumi Aamar. In real life though, I wanted to be a psychologist,” chirps Koel

Road, Movie : The scene shifts to the medical camp where Koel is a doctor and Dev has landed with an injury after a bike accident. As Dev lies down on the bed, Raj checks out the camera angle. “There are a few very risky shots. The characters are always on the move as most of the film is about the two men riding a motorcycle and looking for a girl,” says Raj

Listeners of BIG 92.7 FM were in for a pleasant surprise on 15th January, 2010 as Tollywood hearthrob Dev and Koel arrived at the station to promote their newly released film "Bolo Na Tumi Amar". The atmosphere at the studio was bursting with energy as Dev and Koel connected with their fans on air.

Love Ke Liye Kuchh Bhi Karega

Film : Bolo Na Tumi Aamar

Cast : Dev, Koel Mallick, Sabyasachi Chakraborty, Tota Roy Choudhury, Bharat Kaul and others

Screaming, shouting, mock fist fighting, strangulation gestures and some more screaming between “Madur ma” (designed to be an effective means to cheese off Madhurima, played by Koel) and Abhishek (Dev) make up a near 85 per cent of Bolo Na Tumi Aamar. The rest has customary dialogue diatribe, even a blood-soaked Abhishek pleading to Madhurima, “Ekbar bolo na tumi amar” and a thus far aggressive girlfriend reaching a moment of realization that Abhi indeed is the man for her.
In a word, there seems to be an overdose of two emotions in Bolo Na... hatred and love. What is surprisingly missing in NK Salil’s screenplay and dialogue is the gradual intermingling of the two. The build up to the twist in the tale where Madhurima and Abhishek have no choice but to tie the knot seems anything but natural. Abhi’s sudden concern for Madhurima when he doesn’t find her at home at a late hour, his outburst on seeing her return late and Madhurima’s apology at having put Abhi in a spot could have had some sort of a prelude to suggest that their confrontational selves are thawing into a more compatible communion.
But when you have a Dev-Koel to save the day, one might expect such glitches to be covered up. Certainly, if looks could kill, the duo could have won hands down. While Koel looks ravishing in a slimmer and toned avatar, Dev, as usual, steals the show with his physique and histrionics. And then there are Tota and Sabyasachi, who as expected, do their bit in their assigned frames.
Acting apart, there is Jeet Gannguli’s music to Priyo Chattopadhyay and Goutam Sushmit’s lyrics such as Bolo na tumi aamar, Le paglu, E cutpiece and the like that add sufficient zing to an otherwise bland tale.

It’s not all work and no fun for the team of Le Chakka...Director Raj Chakrabarty, definitely not a dull boy, knows how to mingle both. CT takes a sneak peek at what’s going on behind the camera .

^^ 1) HATE AT FIRST SIGHT : Dev and Payel are at loggerheads when the former comes to stay at her residence. “In real life, I am a quite an introvert. But I had to fight with full-throated ease in this scene with Dev,” Payel laughs .

^^ 2) DIRECTOR’S CUT : Anindo Banerjee plays a goon in the movie. “Today, I am an actor and hence, not worried about playing the captain of the ship. The whole tension of being a director on the sets rests only on Raj,” Anindo said .

^^ 3) FOOD FOR THOUGHT : Health is wealth, think our actors. Lunch means fresh fruits for Dev and even in between shots, the actor chose to limit himself to just tea and biscuits .

^^ 4) TAKE TWO : “Dev and Payel are giving their best to the film. With Dev around, it’s difficult to shoot on the streets of Kolkata. But still we are having a lot of fun,” says Raj .

^^ 5) ALL EARS : Post lunch, Dev and Payel rehearse their scenes. Dev, by the way, has pierced his left ear only to play Abir’s character. “I’ve also grown a beard,” the actor says .

Raj Chakrabarty’s Le Chakka .. which is about the ghoti and bangal fight, might see Jeet Ganguly as just a singer ..

It’s not a political Ora Amra fight that’s inspired Raj Chakrabarty’s Le Chakka... To be precise, Raj has been inspired by the age-old fight between ghoti and bangal in a North Kolkata para. And surprise of surprises is that this time around, composer Jeet Gannguli might be seen only as a singer and not the composer of a Raj Chakrabarty film!
Speaking about LC, Raj says, “These days, one doesn’t find the camaraderie that one used to find in a para. Despite the storms in umpteen number of teacups concerning sports, food and politics, the bond between the neighbours was unmisteakable. My film will have the essence of that old Bangaliana culture,” informs the director.
Though Jeet has always composed for Raj’s film, the composer will give LC a miss because of date problems. “Indraadip will be scoring the music for my film. Even if Jeetda isn’t scoring the music, I want his association with my movie. That’s why I’ve approached him to record a number though he is yet to give me a nod,” Raj says.
Jeet, who is currently busy with shows and music composition, confirms the offer for singing the number — Ekta bindaas para, chole hazaro bhantara. “Yes,” he says, adding, “I am certainly looking into it though I’m extremely busy with my prior commitments.”
Meanwhile, Indraadip says, “Music will the USP of the film with melody-based numbers. In order to get a contemporary feel to the lyrics, we are roping in copy writers to do the job. Raj exactly knows what he wants. As a music composer, it’s easy to work and communicate with him,” says Indraadip about the score for this comedy.

As for the cast, Dev will play a bangal even though in real life, he is a ghoti. “I’m actually paying a visit to North Kolkata to get a feel of the ghoti and bangal rivalry and know more about the essence of the quintessential para culture. Being a ghoti in real life, I have to transform my body language and mannerisms to play a bangal. LC is basically a sports film where cricket plays a major role,” says Dev, who is also doing Sujit Mondol’s next from February.
And guess what Dev’s name is in LC? Well, it’s Abir — the same name that his character had in Challenge. “Abir is a lucky name for me. It has worked in Challenge. I hope it works for me this time as well,” laughs Dev.
It remains to be seen whether Abir in LC will challenge the boxoffice success of Abir in Challenge !

Dev and Koel are off to Singapore. Gossip mongers need not read between the lines. It’s work calling for the duo. The actors are all set to shoot a song sequence for Sujit Mondol’s, Bolona Tumi Aamar.
“This is the second time after Mon Mane Na, that I’m flying to Singapore to shoot a song sequence with Koel. We’ll be shooting in Singapore and some remote islands there. The music of the film is scored by Jeetda (Jeet Gannguli) and the songs are really peppy. Hope I can do a good job,” says Dev, before leaving for Singapore. So, will it be all work and no play? “Well, it all depends on the schedule. I would love to explore the place and pick up stuff as Singapore is the shopaholics’ paradise,” he signs off .

SWITCHING CAMPS ?

Tired of allegations of being a copycat director, Raj Chakrabarty has decided to make Le Chakka... that’s based on Padmanabha Dasgupta’s original story. This film, by the way, will also be Raj’s first under a new banner .

This one could be a real Challenge for Tollywood’s most sought-after director. After having set the cash registers jingling with Chirodini... Tumi Je Amar, Challenge and the morerecent Prem Amar, all with Shree Venkatesh Films, Raj Chakrabarty is set to spread his wings. Buzz is that he will be directing his next, Le Chakka..., with another production house. Though it’s way too early to claim that Raj has switched camps, his choice of making a film with another banner is big news in the industry.
When CT got in touch with the director, he confirmed saying, “I am doing my next under Srijon’s banner. With the script and story by Padmanabha Dasgupta, this one will again have the Dev-Payel pair after they worked together in I Love You. The rest of the cast includes Rudranil Ghosh, Kanchan Mullick, Ritwick Bhattacharya, Kharaj Mukherjee and Partho.” This big budget film, shooting of which begins in December, highlights the Bangaliana prevalent in North Kolkata with subtle political references. Ask him why he broke away from a long-term association and he says, “I was tired of the allegations levelled against me for making South remakes. Let me clarify that Le Chakka... is an original script.”
And what about rumours of him having rubbed Shree Venkatesh Films the wrong way? “Just because I am not working with them on this project doesn’t mean that I’ve had some problems with them. I am directing their production with Jeet, Koel and Dev. The project will go on the floors in February. The delay is only because of date issues of the cast.”

Meanwhile, Raj isn’t busy with direction alone. He is soon turning producer with a reality show titled Laugh Aaj Kal. Involving celebs, the show will have Chandrabindoo’s Anindya as the anchor. Now that’s what we call hitting a chakka!

Dev has made a guest appearance in Avik Mukhopadhyay’s Ekti Tarar Khonjein the role of a star. With Arpita Pal making her comeback in this Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s production, the obvious question was whether the offer was first made to Prosenjit to play the star in the movie. Says Aniruddha, “We wanted someone younger. It was very generous of Dev to agree to do it. Shayan too has done a great job in the film. Prosenjit is extremely professional. Despite requests, Prosenjit never came down to the sets. He gave space to everyone. Moreover, we didn’t want it to seem as if Prosenjit has agreed to a guest appearance because wife Arpita is doing the film. We didn’t want a package deal.”

Guess what Dev and Shrabanti did during the Pujas? They roamed the south of America, from New Jersey to Houston, wooing the non-resident Bangalis with their recent release Dujone.

The love story directed by Rajib Kumar and produced by Ashok Dhanuka had two ticketed shows, one each at New Jersey and Houston.

“The idea behind the trip was to tap the potential audience abroad. I got in touch with the Bengali association in America and Netflix, the world’s largest online DVD rental service, to take Dujone to the auditoriums. We got two shows. The tickets were priced at US $10 and the response was very encouraging,” said distributor-exhibitor Arijit Dutta, who led the Dujone team. The film is in its third week in Bengal, having released in 119 theatres.

Back home, Dev is basking in his new-found overseas fan base. “The people in Houston and New Jersey loved Dujone. So long they only knew Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, now they know me! They posed for photographs with me!” he said. “The crowd was a mix of young and old, and some of them came up to me to say that I was a natural,” says Shrabanti.

Jeet Gannguli’s music was a hit with the audience, added Arijit, who is working on a tie-up with Netflix. “We are looking forward to theatrical screenings of more Bengali films. Once the agreement with Netflix comes through, VCDs and DVDs of Bengali films will be available abroad within a month of a film’s commercial release. Probashi Bangalis can also choose to watch Bengali films on TV. We’ve even discussed the possibility of shooting in these places at subsidised rates,” said Arijit.

If all goes well, Arijit will soon take five more Tollywood films — both mainstream and off-beat — for ticketed screenings in the US.

1) The plot: In many ways, Du Jone is like a deja vu of Eighties’ Bollywood. Rich boy falls for not-so-rich girl and two sets of parents are ready to spoil the fun. And how do they romance? Well, on the land phone! Then, hero-heroine run away from home and sing songs in the woods. After that, hero beats up baddies and heroine bandages his wounds.

2) The players: Dev is rich boy Akash with a heart of gold, while Shrabanti is feisty middle-class girl Meghna who won’t take no for an answer from her parents. The goon they run into is Arijit (‘Priya’) Dutta, who looks scary in a black leather jacket, dark glasses and long hair.

3) The chemistry: Dev is better in the song-dance sequences than the action scenes where he’s straight out of Challenge. Shrabanti is her bubbly, chirpy self, like in her last film Bhalobasha Bhalobasha. The let-down? Their chemistry. Dev-Shrabanti aren’t as good as Dev-Subhashree. Their romance is half-baked.

4) The family: Kharaj Mukherjee’s antics as the stupid professor eyeing a sexy female professor draw a lot of laughs. Nondinii, as Dev’s scheming stepmom in noodle-strap gowns, looks her part. But Seema (Bandit Queen) Biswas steals the show with her bitter expressions as Shrabanti’s spiteful pishi (aunt).

5) The teamleader: Among other things, director Rajib Kumar, Shrabanti’s real-life hubby, should have updated at least parts of his film (case in point: the chase scenes). Nuvvu Nenu, the Telugu film which is the “inspiration” for Du Jone, was made eight years ago.

6) The soundtrack: Jeet Gannguli’s music fails to match up to his last two scores for Challenge and Poran Jai Joliya Re.

Producer Ashok Dhanuka has gone into overdrive to make the Dev-Shrabanti-starrer Dujone a real potboiler.

“Dujone is the first film with DI (digital intermediate) from the first frame to the last. Bollywood has long adopted the method, but so far only important portions of Bengali films were sent for DI,” claims Himangshu Dhanuka, the co-producer of Dujone which releases on September 17.

What that means for the cine-goer is that each scene in Dujone has been treated digitally to improve the visual quality. For those not in the know, DI lends a “super glossy” picture quality. The Dhanukas have shelled out Rs 20 lakh for the DI alone. The film’s total budget is Rs 2 crore.

“The film looks amazing after DI and all the flaws have been erased. For instance, in one scene the door paint had chipped off. I was worried about it but DI has made it look perfect,” says Dujone director Rajib Kumar.

“Dujone is inspired by the superhit Telugu film Nuvvu Nenu,” says Himangshu. The Dhanukas have bought the copyright to make the film in Bengali. Dev and Shrabanti play college-goers who have problems with their parents and develop a bond but their paths are separated by a twist of fate.

“There are several risky shots but we didn’t want to compromise. We’ve shot on railway tracks with a running train which Shrabanti and Dev had to board. It was a very difficult shot. We have also shot in the interiors of Gorumara forest and near a waterfall in Sikkim,” says Rajib.

DI apart, Dujone will pull off another first in Tollywood when it will be screened at some local theatres in Chicago, Miami, San Francisco and New Jersey. “We’ve spoken to the Bengali associations at these places and they are keen to screen the film,” adds Himangshu.
